Built in 1570, Humayun's Tomb was the first garden tomb in the subcontinent. The tomb's design was based on Islamic paradise gardens. This red and white sandstone building is believed to have been designed and erected by Humayun's queen Hamida Banu Begam. The structure of the tomb is divided into four squares separated by causeways, water channels pathways forming a typical Mughal garden called Charbagh. It is believed that the last Mughal emperor Bahadur Shah Zafar II had taken refuge in Humayun's tomb during the first war of Independence in 1857. Humayun's Tomb inspired several other Mughal architectural innovations later including the famed Taj Mahal. |
