Attesting to its growing popularity, online movie rental service Netflix has hit the 10 million subscriber milestone.
Great for Desis
As we wrote 14 months ago, for movie buffs living in the U.S., Netflix is an excellent source of Bollywood, Kollywood, Hollywood and foreign language movies.
Whether it’s the crappy Drona, the ugly Dostana or the fine Anniyan, they are all available on Netflix.
You pick your movies online on the Netflix web site and the DVDs come to you via post in a day or two. Postage both ways is included in the subscription.
The introduction of the Instant Play of movies on TV via Roku and other set-tops through a broadband connection is another reason for subscribing to Netflix.
Will Desis Bite?
We doubt many of our desis will sign up for Netflix as long as they can get cheap rental of pirated copies of new Bollywood movies for one or two dollars from the Indian grocery stores.
India has several DVD rental services like SeventyMM but we are not sure if any of them have a larger subscriber base.
Here are some interesting Netflix statistics:
No of Titles – 100,000
No of Titles for Instant Viewing – 12,000
No of DVDs – 55 million
DVDs Shipped Every Day – 2 million
No of Subscribers – 10 million
No of Subscription plans – 9
No of Distribution Points – 58
No of Movie Ratings – 2 Billion
