Dev Anand - Hindi Film Star (Date of Birth - September 26, 1923) Popularly referred to as an evergreen hero, the 84-year-old Dev Anand is an Indian movie legend. Dev Anand started his movie journey in 1946 with Hum Ek Hain. Guide - based on the novel of the same name by R.K.Narayan - is considered to be Dev Anand's best movie. While the Hindi version of Guide turned out to be a big hit, the English version was a dud. Besides acting, Dev Anand also ventured into directing and producing films. His production company Navketan Films debuted in 1949. Prem Pujari, his first attempt at direction, didn't set the box office afire. But his second shot at direction - Harê Raama Harê Krishna about the Hippie cult and the Hare Krishna movement - starring Dev Anand and voluptuous babe Zeenat Aman as the pot-smoking Janice turned out to be a blockbuster at the box office. Born Devdutt Pishorimal Anand on September 26, 1923 in Gurdaspur, the actor's two brothers Chetan Anand and Vijay Anand were also closely involved with the Hindi movie industry. Author Stephen Alter who met Dev Anand three years ago had this to say about the actor: "Even at eighty-one, there is a dapper quality about him that sets him apart from many other stars of his generation." Dev Anand told Alter: "I still get excited making a film. There will always be that excitement. With each film I have matured but with each film I also grow younger." To his credit, Dev Anand was one of the few actors who dared to oppose Indira Gandhi for declaring a state of emergency in 1975. Dev Anand married Kalpana Kartik in 1954. They have one son Suneil Anand. Dev Anand is the winner of several awards including the Dada Saheb Phalke award. |
