The fight scene towards the end of Don must surely count among the most inept action scenes in the history of the motion picture industry.
Don features Amitabh Bachchan, Zeenat Aman and Pran performing some of the most bizarre stunts that anyone can visualize.
The crude fight scenes not withstanding, Don was a big hit in its time and has a bunch of fine songs including Yeh Mera Dil, Khaike Pan Banaras Wala and Are Diwano Mujhe Pehchano.
Released in the late 1970s, Don was another shot in the arm in Amitabh Bachchan's rise to Bollywood superstardom.
Lacking anything extraordinary, Don is just another crude Bollywood masala flick.
Perhaps, what made this movie a hit with the audience was the music and Amitabh Bachchan's solid performance in dual roles as the bad guy and the good guy.
The presence of sexy Zeenat Aman certainly didn't hurt either. But it is sheer agony to see Zeenat Aman performing all those crude stunt scenes.
Amitabh Bachchan is Don, a big time smuggler and ruthless criminal. However this Don meets his nemesis in the Deputy Superintendent of Police D'Silva (Ifthekar) and is killed.
To nab the entire gang, the DSP devises a masterplan. He does not disclose Don's death. Instead, he hires a street artiste and Don look-alike Vijay (Amitabh Bachchan) to impersonate Don and infiltrate the criminal gang. In return, he offers to take care of two young kids that Vijay has been looking after.
To Vijay's horror, the DSP is soon killed in an encounter with the gang. Vijay and the gang are captured by the police, who refuse to believe Vijay's persistent statements that he is just an impostor Don trying to help the DSP. However, the criminals quickly realize he's an impostor.
Vijay is now caught between the Scylla of the disbelieving police and the Charybdis of the gang. Is there a way out for him?
Zeenat Aman plays the role of Roma, who joins Don's gang to avenge her brother's death at the hands of the Don.
Don came six years after the wonderful Hollywood movie Godfather where Marlon Brando played the Mafia chief Don Corleone. But Chandra Barot failed to learn anything from director of Godfather Francis Ford Coppola.
