Why is the [F] in brackets?

It means that the original ‘f’ was in lower case and that we’ve changed it to upper case.
This practice is used when people pull out quotes from the middle of a long sentence.
Another oft-used device while quoting is the sic notation that tells the reader the mistake in the quotation was in the original.
