13B Box Office – Madhavan’s Real Horror Show

Does Madhavan even count at all?

If Madhavan disappeared from Bollywood or Kollywood today, would anyone even notice.

No, we don’t think many people would notice or care.

Madhavan’s horror show 13B came in at No-78 for the March 6-8, 2009 opening weekend at the U.S. box office and had an average gross of $675 per theatre while Yaavarum Nalam came in at 67 and notched up an average gross of $1,843.

Folks, look at the U.S. box office numbers for 13B (Hindi) and the Tamil version Yaavarum Nalam (Tamil). A real horror show for the distributor:

    More nonsense from you.

The more you scribble/type, the more you expose yourself. You might want to rest your itchy fingers.

Media reports from the homeland say that 13B has not had a good opening in India too.

    r. madhavan was one fat ugly guy when he made his hindi debut in rehna tere dil mein. the pairing was so lame with diya mirza (who i think is hot but can’t act). he tried again and again to make it in the hindi films but failed. his two minute role in rang de basanti got him more hindi roles. he got guru because he is associated with mani rathnam. other than that nobody really wants to see him in hindi films. the fact is that it is hard for south indian actors (kamal hassan, rajnikant, arvind swamy, nagarjun, etc) to make it in bollywood. and the bombing of 13B proves my point.

and he is ugly in terms of bollywood standards. but still he can act way better than abhishek bachanan.

    SearchIndia.com Responds:

It’s hard to believe Madhavan has much of a career left in movies as a solo hero. Maybe as a sidekick like in Anbe Sivam, Guru or Rang De Basanti.

Basic plot is a bit diff compared to regular horror movies …..but …..too lengthy ….and hence fails …..considering that horror movies are supposed to provide that chill factor in a thriller format.

  6. navaraj   March 10, 2009 at 8:42 am

Watched a telugu movie recently— Arundathi (I understand barely a word or two in telugu. Got a friend to translate the dialogues. Liked it.Horror movie. the effects are good. not normally seen in Indian cinema. But lots of ideas taken from “The ring” . still good by Indian cinema standards.

    SearchIndia.com Responds:

    Netflix doesn’t have it.

@dantheman – I also agree Maddy is “ass”ociated with Manirathinam at a deep level.. about 6″ or 7”.. he is appearing in every goddamned Mani movie.

  8. Asha Tampa   March 10, 2009 at 11:37 am

Yep, I watched Arundhati, and felt sick to my stomach at a few scenes. Sonu Sood is best suited for that kinda roles, I guess. Overall, its a nice horror movie, but dint scare me much, which doesnt say nethn for the movie. I want to write a review on my blog, but what with my regular job bein writing articles, I dont feel like doin more writing….

Planning to watch 13B 2moro… wish me luck!

    SearchIndia.com Responds:

    13B? Have fun.

Do let us know your experience.

SI team – Did you guys watch the movie? I don’t see a link for your review? Let me know.

Generally I pick movies based on director / cast and watch – definitely Madhavan is not in the preferred list and so is many young heroes now in Tamil!!

On diff note – why don’t you guys review serials – I started watching “24” and it is really gripping! Our directors can take few episodes and create movie out of it. Problem with out directors is they don’t have the real knack even to copy!!

    SearchIndia.com Responds:

    1. No, as we said in one of our earlier posts or comments we decided to skip this and go instead to Gomorrah, which we found to be excellent.

    2. Regarding watching serials, there are only 24 hrs in a day. 🙁

24 looks interesting. We’d love to watch Sopranos and West Wing, the White House series.

I have to disagree with reader dantheman and others who feel that Madhavan cant act. I cant believe that you have compared Madhavan with Bacchhan Jr. Maddy is a very decent actor, who understands a few things about acting. Be it Minnale or RHTDM, or Aiyatha Ezhuthu, or more recently Mumbai Meri Jaan, Madhavan has done good work.
Even in a dud movie like Ramji Londonwaale, Madhavan has given an endearing performance.

Regarding Madhavan being fat and ugly: a bit fat, yes, his is going off shape. Ugly ?? Folks like Om Puri and Nana Patekar arent beautiful either. Now wait, I am not putting Madhavan on the same plane as these people, but looking good is not a prerequisite for being a successful artist. And inspite of his smile, if Madhavan is ugly, then pray, what is Abhishek Bacchhan ?

    On 13B:
The Tamil version has received favourable reviews, but not the Hindi one. Possibly because it was directed by Vikram Kumar, who is more at ease in Tamil. The movie is said to have an original storyline, and surprises you without resorting to cheap tricks.

However, I agree that Madhavan may find it difficult to become a commercially successful hero (whatever that means) in Hindi film industry. He may yet do well commercially in Tamil movies, but importantly, I hope he keeps doing some good work.

Jus came back a few min ago from 13B… Not scary at all, though its quite different from the usual Hindi horror movies. The 7PM show was housefull, so we had to go for the 10 30PM show, which was 3/4th empty. It was an okay movie, and the guys hated it in the sense they found it really funny. I liked it though, cos I felt scared in some scenes in the second half. It’s recvd mainly positive reviews here, and that is what I’m gonna write, too 🙂

    SearchIndia.com Responds:

You write above: the guys hated it in the sense they found it really funny

We thought 13B was a horror movie.

Well, we guess when Indian movie-makers try to make a horror movie it turns into a comedy and vice versa.

  12. SRINIVAS   March 12, 2009 at 3:01 am

Madhavan is a good actor ….

In Tamil there are others and he needs to do mass films to reach the top or do movies like Cheran does ….

In Hindi…its difficult …there are so many guys around …..they are not able to get good scripts ….so Madhavan really cant do much …

  13. samirprasad   March 19, 2009 at 9:20 pm

    The film is quite good.
im living in cardiff and the film is doing admirably well out here.
even more gratifying fact is that the film is going to be remade in hollywood. the official news is out

this proves how trash this review is …..

    SearchIndia.com Responds:

    1. You write above: this proves how trash this review is …..

You are so stupid that you don’t even realize the above post is not a review but a box office report on the miserable performance of the movie.

    2. You write: even more gratifying fact is that the film is going to be remade in hollywood.

We’ll believe it when it happens.

Not sure abt 13B but Yavarum nalam was definitely a good movie.

Bollywood, they may not encourage these kind of movies as thr is no sex, no vulgarity and no six packs…
Given that u also cannot differentiate a gud movie and a bad movie, and u generally hate all tamil movies, and u generally like watever is sh*t out of hollywood, u may not like this movie either… but if only u say that grudge is better than this movie, i have got sooo many names for u which ill tell u after ur review….

    SearchIndia.com Responds:

    1. Yesterday, one of our local Punjabi friends was telling us 13B was good.

    2. You write: u generally hate all tamil movies, and u generally like watever is sh*t out of hollywood

    Not true.

We liked Pokiri, Sigappu Rojakkal, Anbe Sivam, Mullum Malarum, Kaakha Kaakha, Ooty Varai Uravu….

In Hindi, we enjoyed Aaradhana, Bobby, Sholay, DDLJ, Hera Pheri, Manorama Six Feet Under, Matrubhoomi, Yaadon Ki Baaraat, Salaam Bombay, Fanaa, Cheeni Kum et al.

But for Gomorrah, we’d have gone to Yavarum Nalam.

“he(madhavan) is ugly in terms of bollywood standards”

Dude it is not about who is smart in Bollywood but who exposes more. We’ll all know John Abraham’s near naked exposure in Dostana and how u *****d at it…. Ofcourse Madhavan cannot satisfy the Gay bollywood audience….

    @SI
Can you send me a link where u wrote bad review abt any Hollywood movie?

    SearchIndia.com Responds:

You write: Can you send me a link where u wrote bad review abt any Hollywood movie

Why just one? Here, take five:

    1. Will Smith’s Seven Pounds – Do Good, Feel Good Nonsense

    2. Body of Lies – Disappointing

    3. Righteous Kill Review – No, No & No

    4. Indiana Jones…Crystal Skull – Ain’t No Magic Here

And this Bonus of a desi babe in a recent Hollywood flick:

    5. Shriya Saran’s Hollywood Flick – Crappy M & B Story

So, the next time you develop the itch to talk or rather write drivel about ‘how we only have good things to say about Hollywood,’ take a hammer to your keyboard. Comprende.

“In Hindi…its difficult …there are so many guys around …..they are not able to get good scripts ….so Madhavan really cant do much ”

Definitely dude. I agree. He’s straight and he cannot expose so much…

    SearchIndia.com Responds:

What’s all this nonsense about being gay and Bollywood (referring to your previous comment and this one)?

If you lived in Iowa (the new California) and you were gay, you can even get married.

We’ve never understood the homophobic garbage in Indian movies.

We remember Kamal Haasan’s character in Vettaiyadu Villayadu hurling anti-gay obscenities against the villains. Since art often imitates life, we guess it’s a reflection of the anti-gay culture in Tamil Nadu.

In our view, there’s nothing wrong in being gay or lesbian or transgender or bisexual. Whether you want to go down on a p***y or a p***k or both 😉 is a a personal preference and predilection that shouldn’t matter to others.
