Some Great Kannada Songs

Over the years, we’ve derived as much pleasure from Kannada songs as we have from Hindi and Tamil songs.

P.B.Srinivas, S.P.Balasubramaniam, Rajkumar, Vani Jayaram, S.Janaki, P.Susheela et al have given so much pleasure to so many millions for so many years.

Sadly, the Kannada movie industry is now overshadowed by Hindi, Tamil and Telugu movies.

Here are a few of our Kannada favorites:

* Haavina Dwesha (see above video) – from Naagarahaavu (Vishnuvardhan), directed by Puttanna Kanagal

* Belli Modadha Aacheyinda – from the movie Belli Moda (Kalpana, Kalyan Kumar), again from Puttanna Kanagal

* Neera Bittu Neladhamele – from the film Hombisilu featuring Vishnuvardhan and Aarti

* Uthara Dhruvadhind Dakshina Dhruvaku – starring the late Kalpana and Gangadhar in the 1970s classic Sharapanjara

* Endendu Ninnanu – From the 1970s hit Eradu Kanasu (Raj Kumar, Manjula, Kalpana)

Naaninna Mareyalare – from the movie Ninna Mareyalare starring Rajkumar and Lakshmi

* Hosa baalu ninninda – From the Shankar Nag-Gayatri movie Auto Raja. What a shame that Shankar Nag died young (in a road accident).

* Nodamma Hudugi – from Prema Loka (Bollywood star Juhi Chawla and Ravichandran). The film turned out to be a blockbuster in the mid 1980s.

    SearchIndia.com Responds:

    1. You write: haah..A tamil born and brought up in bangalore and now settled in USA?..

Oh, no. We were neither born nor brought up in Bangalore.

Actually, we grew up in Eelam a.k.a. Tamil Nadu. You are right on the last part, yes, now settled in the U.S.

Like a lot of Indians, we are polyglots, comfortable in several languages.

    2. Elliruve is one of favorites too. We’ve listened to it a million times. As a matter of fact, listened to it about an hour ago.

    3. If you look again at our post, Neera Bittu is the second song in our list.

    4. Kanasalu Neene is a lovely song. Thanks.

    5. Other Kannada favorites include Binkada Singari, Ellelli nodali, Yeko Yeno (Rajkumar at his second funniest after Love Me or Hate Me), Banigondu elle ellide

As a Kannadiga, I am glad that you listen to Kannada songs and enjoy the good ones. Every song mentioned above is indeed very enjoyable.

    Some more:

    Hosa Belaku (Dr.Raj Kumar, Saritha):
    1. Ravi neenu aagasadindaa mareyaagi … (a fine song)
    2. Hosa belakoooo, moooduthide …

    Ranganayaki (Aarthi, Ambarish, Ashok, Ramakrishna)
    1. Mandaara pushpavu neene (superb song, get it right now)
    2. Title song that I dont exactly remember

    Kavirathna Kaalidasa
    1. Priyathama, karuneya thoreyaa..
    2. Sada kannale pranayada …
    3. Belli moodithu koLi koogithu… (Dr.Raj essaying the role of a simpleton Kaalidasa, who was a shephard without a care in the world)
    4. Maanikya Veena… without doubt the clincher.

More recently, a movie called Mungaaru Male had some fine songs, and the movie too was very watchable.
The movie was very popular, made good money, and along with some other decent movies, this is being seen as a beginning of good times for Kannada movie industry.
    Lets wait and see.

    SearchIndia.com Responds:

Yes, we’ve listened to songs from all three movies you mention above: Hosa Belaku, Ranganayaki (director Puttana Kanagal, again) and Kavirathna Kaalidasa. All three are good.

We’ve heard about Mungaaru Male from our Kannadiga friends but despite our efforts have not been able to get the DVD.

Another Kannada song we listen to is Endendu Ninnanu Marethu from Eradu Kanasu. We listen to it as much as we listen to Yeh Jo Mohabbat Hai (Hindi) or Sollaththan Ninaikiren (Tamil).

  3. SRINIVAS   December 7, 2008 at 6:55 am

SI: Actually, we grew up in Eelam a.k.a. Tamil Nadu. You are right on the last part, yes, now settled in the U.S.

there is a saying ..Oru Tamilian than enoru Tamilian Periya Edhiri ….you are a perfect example of that

    SearchIndia.com Responds:

    There is another saying:

Thanthai Periyar sonnar Papanum pamb paatha, papane modhale adi.

(Periyar said, if you see a Brahmin and a snake, kill the Brahmin first) 🙂

Hi SI, Big fan of the site. 🙂

    Mungaru Male song: anisuthide
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gDTQJs6LbHM

Sonu nigam has sung it very beautifully.

Off topic – Have you seen Apocalypse Now redux? How is the movie?

    Thanks

    SearchIndia.com Responds:

    1. You write: Mungaru Male song: anisuthide

    Thanks.

Nice song. Decent acting. Baalla yugagalu ayithu Kannada picture nodi (Been centuries since we saw a Kannada movie).

Unfortunately, Kannada movies are not that big in the U.S. unlike Hindi, Tamil or even Telugu. Netflix doesn’t stock Kannada movies too.

    2. You write: Have you seen Apocalypse Now redux?

No, only the shorter Apocalypse Now many years back.

    Watching Transsiberian this evening.

  5. Þórarinsdóttir   December 8, 2008 at 6:01 pm

Looks like Mungaru Male is a remake of Kaadhal http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qGuEOHrb0k8&feature=related

Bharath and Sandhya looked younger(and better) than this pair.

  6. halfMonkHalfHitman   December 8, 2008 at 8:27 pm

  7. satya   December 8, 2008 at 10:14 pm

    @ Þórarinsdóttir
Looks like Mungaru Male is a remake of Kaadhal .

“No, Mungaaru male is not a remake of Kaadhal. But the link you provided is of janumada gelathi which is actually a remake of kadhal”

    SearchIndia.com Responds:

  8. satya   December 8, 2008 at 10:34 pm

You were supposed to review Satya?

Its ranked 3rd in the 25 must see bollywood movie.

    http://movies.indiatimes.com/Special_Features/25_Must_See_Bollywood_Movies/articleshow/msid-1250837,curpg-3.cms

    SearchIndia.com Responds:

It’s No-1 on our Netflix queue. We hope to get it on Wednesday.

  9. Þórarinsdóttir   December 8, 2008 at 11:06 pm

oops guys.. I understood that “Mungaaru Female” Ganesha acted in the remake of Kadhaal.. I misunderstood the youtube title.
Satya found a mistake in my post, so
I’ll return the favor 🙂 Satya is not ranked 3rd. It is 3rd in reverse chronological order of the must watch movies..

I am watching Handcock (from redbox, where else!) now.

    SearchIndia.com Responds:

You write above: I am watching Handcock…now

You watching Handcock? Is this what they call a Freudian slip ?

Hey, we don’t blame ya. With Charlize Theron around, we’d be watching Hancock or rather playing Handcock too.

  10. SRINIVAS   December 9, 2008 at 4:46 am

Thanthai Periyar sonnar Papanum pamb paatha, papane modhale adi.

(Periyar said, if you see a Brahmin and a snake, kill the Brahmin first)

    Don’t commit suicide ….

    SearchIndia.com Responds:

Yeah, some of your asinine comments are driving us to it.

  11. satya   December 9, 2008 at 7:28 am

porarinsdottir : “Satya is not ranked 3rd. It is 3rd in reverse chronological order of the must watch movies”

Nope, you’re again wrong. see what wikipedia has to tell.
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Satya_(film).
    No mention on “chronological order”.

  12. Þórarinsdóttir   December 9, 2008 at 8:02 am

yes, Charlize looked fabulous.. the second half was a damp squib.. But the whole movie was like 1/2 the length of most indian movies.. looked like that they wanted to finish the movie in a hurry.. wise decision financially.. they still made a hefty profit.

  13. Þórarinsdóttir   December 9, 2008 at 10:28 am

Satya – No, you are wrong 🙂

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:About

Wikipedia is written collaboratively by volunteers from all around the world; anyone can edit it..

So Wikipedia, while is nice source, is not necessarily 100% accurate. So you really would rate Black as #1 movie of all time?

    Reverse Chronological Order:
    2005 – Black
    2001 – Lagaan
    1998 – Satya
    1995 – DDLJ
    1988 – QSQT
1987 – Mr. India .. would you rate Mr. India above Sholay?
    ….
1951 – Awaara, which would kick QSQT ass any time.

    SearchIndia.com Responds:

You write above: 1987 – Mr. India .. would you rate Mr. India above Sholay?

Sholay was in a different class, far superior.

  14. halfMonkHalfHitman   December 10, 2008 at 8:34 pm

So how did you like Transsiberian?

    SearchIndia.com Responds:

    Overall Decent Movie.

One of these days, we’re making that Transsiberian trip (and hopefully we won’t meet Carlos/Abby with their tiny dolls).

Like Roy (in the movie), we love trains but haven’t had the chance to travel far by train in many, many years. The last lengthy train-trip was NYC-Chicago a gazillion years ago. Took about 20 hours because we got caught in a bad storm….
