Desi film producer and financier Deepak Nayar has launched a global digital entertainment studio and online creative community called Filmaka for aspiring filmmakers.
Deepak Nayar is the producer of English movies with Indian themes like Bend It Like Beckham, Bride & Prejudice and The Mistress of Spices.
Here’s Filmaka’s mission in its own words:
Filmaka is committed to inspiring, celebrating, and rewarding creativity and talent by providing professional opportunities for undiscovered filmmakers and writers from all corners of the world through a variety of competitions that are juried by industry leaders.
To be announced on April 28, the winner of the first competition will direct a feature film produced by Filmaka.Â
Filmaka’s panel includes folks like Colin Firth (Bridget Jones Diary), Werner Herzog (Rescue Dawn), Neil LaBute (Nurse Betty), John Madden (Shakespeare in Love), Zak Penn (X-Men: The Last Stand), Paul Schrader (Raging Bull), Bill Pullman (Independence Day) and Wim Wenders (Wings of Desire).
Former FOX Television Entertainment Group Chairman Sandy Grushow is the president of Filmaka.
At the launch of Filmaka, Nayar said:
Having worked with filmmakers like David Lynch, Paul Schrader, and Wim Wenders, the quality of work and contribution from Filmaka members continues to impress me.
Filmaka says it conducted a year-long beta before the official launch to develop and mentor the community and to begin generating content.
Apparently in the last 12 months, Filmaka has built a community of 3,600 aspiring filmmakers from 95 countries who created some 80 hours of content.
FX and SAB Miller are supposed to have enlisted Filmaka to create content for traditional and digital media and integrated marketing campaigns.
Filmaka says it’s also entered into revenue-sharing deals with several distribution partners. YouTubeTM and Vuze are to have Filmaka-branded VOD Channels and Play TV UK will have branded VOD and 24/7 linear channels.
