No kidding.Â
Bollywood DVDs from Eros Entertainment will soon be available at Wal-Mart stores in Canada.
Bollywood movie distributor and producer Eros Entertainment has entered into a tie up with Wal-Mart Canada to peddle its collection of Indian movies.
Initially, Eros’ Bollywood DVDs will be available in 27 Wal-Mart stores and subsequently the entire Canadian Wal-Mart network.
Eros plans to make a large number of titles from its catalog of over 1,300 titles as well as its 30-40 new releases every year available in Wal-Mart stores.
Discussing the deal with Wal-Mart Canada, Eros International USA president Ken Naz said:
“Bollywood as an entertainment category is growing rapidly internationally. Canada is a very important market for us for cinema as well as DVD distribution.  We are very excited to be working with Wal-Mart in Canada as it will enable widespread availability of quality DVDs at affordable prices to consumers.”
The success of this venture ultimately depends on the price of the DVD.
In WalMart USA, DVD prices of Hollywood movies range from $5-$45 depending on the release dates, special collectors’ edition etc .
In the U.S., DVDs of brand new Bollywood movies, can be rented for $1 or purchased for $5 from the local Indian Grocery store. If the situation is similar in Canada, would Indians want to go to Wal-Mart to buy Bollywood DVDs even if they are quality DVDs?
Plus there is Netflix with its huge collection of Bollywood movies.
We doubt that this deal has the potential to bring in significant revenues to the Eros kitty.
