Vikram’s Kanthaswamy has turned in an unimpressive performance at the U.K. box office.
For the August 21-23 opening weekend, Kanthaswamy debuted at #19 position.
The movie grossed £71,804 on 11 screens, with the per screen average amounting to £6,528.
Kanthaswamy did worse than Vijay’s Kuruvi in gross collections but better than Vikram’s previous film Bheema.
Kuruvi is one of the worst Tamil movies in living memory and it takes special effort for a movie to fare worse than Kuruvi.
Here’s how Kanthaswamy fared at the U.K. box office compared to a few other prominent Tamil movies:
SI brother kanth relased only in 11 screens see the gross average of euro 6528 it is higher than kuruvu and kuselan , while kuruvi released in 13 screens with a gross of euro 5948 . don’t try to hide the facts brother ……. rank is not important collections are importnat …….
SearchIndia.com Responds:
1. You write: don’t try to hide the facts brother…rank is not important collections are importnat
Last we checked, £77,328 is higher than £71,804, even in Tamil Nadu.
So in total gross, Kuruvi did better than Kanthaswamy.
BTW, the currency used is NOT Euro but Pound Sterling.
2. In average gross, Kanthaswamy had a better showing compared to Kuruvi and that is clear from the table.
Nanri boss (thanks boss) for clarifying but in TN the film has picked up a lot after the trimming of 25 minutes vadivelu comedy ……..
SearchIndia.com Responds:
Please let us know when they trim the remaining 180 minutes. 😉
Kuruvi is the worst movie of any language.
Are these the only Tamil movies released in UK? Except for VA, SS and NK, all to a certain extent, I don’t think any other movie deserves to be in that list. So this is not hall of fame, but rather hall of shame…
SearchIndia.com Responds:
You write: Kuruvi is the worst movie of any language.
Somebody once commented that Kuruvi ran/will run for 100 days in Tamil Nadu.
No u r wrong kuruvi ran for 150 days, in the last 1 year this is the only film which ran for 150 days

Naseeruddin Shah says he is bored of acting and terms it as one of the most boring jobs in the world. He also criticizes Bollywood writers saying they lift-off scripts from Hollywood films.
Kindly share your take on this.
SearchIndia.com Responds:
Here’s an excerpt from Naseeruddin Shah’s interview in the above link:
Very true.
Indians are the most unimaginative, unoriginal people in the entire world.
The two fundamental problems plaguing Bollywood and its smaller siblings are pathetic scripts and hopeless acting.
Look at our movies. The idee fixe of Indian movie-makers is love. We are just sick and tired of it.
Isn’t there more to life than this nonsense called love?
SI:Indians are the most unimaginative, unoriginal people in the entire world.
Yes, we all agree on this 100%. That’s why they follow on same trends of previously success (Financially) stories.
Just take the recent Kanthasamy, I think it is just a follow up of Anniyan theme with some condiments from Batman, Spiderman, X-Men, Matrix all mixed together.
There was Paruthi Veeran. After it’s success then came Subramanipuram-same follow up.
There was Anniyan hair style. Then afterwards all the rest lead actors started to wear long hair. i.e. Ajith in Paramasivan.
There are so many similar thefts and copy-cat incidences. So, we can call these lot the entire lots as unimaginative and unoriginal people as SI said.
SearchIndia.com Responds:
BTW, did you see Kanthaswamy or are you one of the smart people that skipped it?
Thanks guys for your Kanthaswamy review. Skipped the movie.
SearchIndia.com Responds:
You write: Skipped the movie
Kanthaswamy is most definitely worth skipping.
SI:BTW, did you see Kanthaswamy or are you one of the smart people that skipped it?
Still not seen it. Meaouw Poona attacked me with its paw. Lately, I’m taking “SI” medication for the prevention of Kolly-Swine-Flu disease.
SearchIndia.com Responds:
Way to go.
Neenga rombha smart (you are too smart).

I added some song list on Lala Yippee, enjoy!
SearchIndia.com Responds:
At SI, we’re all students.
This does not pertain to Kanthaswamy, but it appears that Bollywood has (or a few that are guilt-ridden have) finally woken up to the accusations of plagiarism and has decided to pay the piper. Saw this recently on “The Hufffington Post”
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2009/08/24/bollywood-pays-for-hollyw_n_266926.html
SearchIndia.com Responds:
Thanks. Just read the piece.
Didn’t realize HuffPost even covered Bollywood!
SI Wrote: Indians are the most unimaginative, unoriginal people in the entire world.
Sire, I vehemently disagree. Just by judging a couple of useless shitty directors from Bollywood and Kollywood, you cannot label the whole Indian race as unoriginal.
Kindly get your facts right, we Indians, all over the world have been the cause for many discoveries and inventions.
Very recently an Indian invented a computer device which provides information on whatever things you see/feel around you.
There are lots of INdian in organizations like Intel/IBM who are responsible for n number of innovations.
It is only because of pure respect that Indians still thrive in foreign nations like America, Europe and Australia.
Weren’t you also once an INDIAN???????
There are thousands of aspiring directors who have got promising scripts, they just don;t get support.
I don’t want to run a patti manram here. But I end by saying if your statement is true, then I would take it for granted that you are unimaginative and unoriginal, in short, DUMB.
SearchIndia.com Responds:
1. You write: Sire, I vehemently disagree.
You can disagree till Armageddon Day. But that won’t change facts.
On the world stage, India is irrelevant. In every sphere of life.
If Indians are so imaginative, original and innovative, let’s take a quick look at their distinguished record on diverse parameters:
Kiddo, just because these halitosic Indian mosquitoes breed like rabbits doesn’t make them a great species or their habitat an idyllic Eden.
Get back to us when you learn to put on a Nirodh right. Why else would your blighted country’s population explode to an unmanageable 1.12 billion.
Oh, wait. We almost forgot.
Well, Indians are created with discovery of the concept of Zero. Appropriate, nah.
2. You write: you are unimaginative and unoriginal, in short, DUMB.
Must be a hallmark characteristic of Kali Yuga, where the ignoramASSES of Incredible India can get away with calling Western savants Dumb.
Oh, so you desire to call yourself a westerner aka Amazing American, how sweet! Guess I’ll start you calling a westerner, but you certainly ain’t one.
Hmm, you say, “Kiddo, just because these halitosic Indian mosquitoes breed like rabbits doesn’t make them a great species or their habitat an idyllic Eden.”
Did we ever say so?
With people belonging to 809 castes and 29 states, we find a bit hard to educate our masses of the hazards of overpopulation.
“Get back to us when you learn to put on a Nirodh right. Why else would your blighted country’s population explode to an unmanageable 1.12 billion.”.
Cool dialogues, wish you had replaced Danny Boyle as the director of SDM, it would have shown India in a much “better” light.
Dude, you write as if you knew everything about India, the truth is you never did and never will.
I am tired of replying back to whiners. If you find happiness in calling India by names, there’s nothing we can do here, after all it’s your damn blog.
Have a great day! And by the way, nobody becomes great by criticizing a Country/Person by names.
Don’t waste your time replying to this comment. You and I have got better things to do.
SearchIndia.com Responds:
1. We haven’t missed the fact that you failed to respond to our point on India’s lack of achievement on any front except rapid breeding.
2. You write: Don’t waste your time replying to this comment. You and I have got better things to do.
Since when did we let others dictate us on what to do or rather in this case what not to do. 😉
3. You write: Dude, you write as if you knew everything about India, the truth is you never did and never will.
We won’t go so far as to claim omniscience but we most certainly assert that Mera Bharat Mahaan Nahin.
We haven’t missed the fact that you failed to respond to our point on India’s lack of achievement on any front except rapid breeding.
4. You write: I am tired of replying back to whiners. If you find happiness in calling India by names, there’s nothing we can do here, after all it’s your damn blog.
Last we checked, critics and whiners are not synonyms. Who knows…maybe they use a different dictionary and thesaurus in India.
No, it ain’t our blog. 🙁
Yes, if all talented ones go abroad, call themselves western, work hard and contribute for the welfare of those nations, write a blog calling all Indians as unimaginative and unoriginal, nothing to be surprised about the state we are in.
I’m not blaming you – first, you just followed the league and second, the system here is flawed as well, there is no due recognition for talented ones. So may be you can say most of the Indians (as like any other nations) are stupid and the ones who are not, are selfish.
SearchIndia.com Responds:
We plead guilty.
well, since you have stated the lack of achievements that India has done, I am forced to respond here.
1) I don’t have the exact list of Indians who were awarded for various discoveries/achievements. BUt I do have some links pertaining to Indians being recognized worldwide.

Well, as for the world of Music, we have AR Rehman and Ilayaraja. As far as I know these two maestros have composed innumerable songs that are being loved by people worldwide.
List of famous Indian writers:

These people may not have won awards, but their works are great nonetheless.

Well, to answer your question on why India never got many Nobels/bookers/oscars, there are so many talented people here, but unfortunately bloody criminals and politicians rule the roost here.
To make it worse, everything is quota based, the good and intelligent people never get deserving jobs/opportunities.
And what happens to those people who get talented opportunities, they run away to foreign nations, if you are gonna say bloody NO to this, I am sorry I will produce the list of those 19000+ bloody people who studied here on scholarships and simply went abroad.
Some of their parents here are waiting for them to return, but in vain, I don’t blame them either.
The problem with Indians is that we either think too low of ourselves or think too much of ourselves.
On one side, I see talented people who get bogged down by idiotic bastards(THEVEDIYA PAYANS in TAMIL)and on other side, I see talented people crushing others opportunities.
I HAVE SEEN MANY INDIANS BACKSTABBING THEIR OWN KITH AND KIN TO GO FORWARD IN LIFE. As you once say, Hypocrisy-THY NAME IS INDIAN.
And you know what the bloody fucking average Indian does- He doesn’t clean his own shit, but points out towards others.
Kindly don’t ask me for more facts. If you believe that only those who got Oscars/Bookers/ and Nobels are great people, then I am afraid we have to erase the list of many greats from the list.
Well, to end my long lecture finally, I checked the word CRITIC in Oxford Dictionary, nowhere does it say, “A person who blindly criticizes a person/thing”.
And I have a doubt, weren’t you an Indian too once upon a time??????
Not to say that you are completely wrong my friend, but I just don’t agree to most of your views and the choice of your words.
SearchIndia.com Responds:
1. You write above: If you believe that only those who got Oscars/Bookers/ and Nobels are great people, then I am afraid we have to erase the list of many greats from the list.
We have not lost sight of the fact that Mahatma Gandhi never won the Nobel Peace prize.
2. What is indisputable is that on the world stage, our people count for little.
Our basic point was that much of the noise that Indians make is either prattle or death-rattle.
Trash movie! Worst screenplay.

What’s the response in Tamil Nadu?
Is Quick Gun Murugan (Hindi) released over there? It is an interesting comedy movie imitating South Indian movies (esp Tamil).
It is about this “super hero” who saves people from villain Nasser who kidnaps women good in making Dosa recipe…
SearchIndia.com Responds:
You write above: Is Quick Gun Murugan (Hindi) released over there?
No.
Read about it. Offbeat story.
I stay in Bangalore. But I heard in TN response is not as expected, infact bad, common word of the mouth being mokkai film.
Still people watch it once for Vikram, including me 🙁 We hardly get to see him nowadays…
SearchIndia.com Responds:
You write: We hardly get to see him nowadays…
If Vikram’s movies are going to be like Bheema or Kanthaswamy, tis’ good we don’t see him often.
Hopefully, flops will teach these clowns to make better movies.

Yaaro some clowns in TN may say it for fun because many does not want Vikram to emerge from Bheema Saga.
Infact i yesterday watched the movie for the third time in Sathyam Cinemas (hope u know where it is in Chennai) , the theatre was 90 percent full (morning show). it is not an mokka film as u said, it is better than lot of mokka released this year. There were mostly childrens and family came to watch the film as it was advertised a super hero film and also they are showing trailers repeatedly in Sun channels, so the response is pretty good.
Many didn’t like earlier because of the duration .. At last i am happy that Vikram has emerged/retained well as a BO star in Tamilnadu ..
SI: plz somehow post the BI reports in US ..
SearchIndia.com Responds:
1. Sorry, Box Office info for Tamil movies is not available here. So, we use UK Box Office data as a proxy variable.
2. In future, you must provide English translation in parentheses i.e. brackets when you use Tamil expressions in the comments so that non-Tamils can follow the conversation.
We have provided the English translation this time since you were unaware of the practice here.
@arshad
Macha, why should I lie here?
I have nothing against Vikram. I went to the movie just for Vikram. But the movie is plain pathetic, though acting wise Shriya and Vikram were fine and camera was good. Screenplay was so patchy. Story was stupid, mix of Anniyan and Shivaji, unwanted songs, too loud, ultimate trash.
Obviously I can’t go to each and everyone in TN and ask their opinion. What I told is something I concluded from Orkut forums and mine and my friend’s opinion. I hardly found anyone liking it. I don’t even think anyone other than you can like it.
Here is the link for Chennai’s first week collections, the distributor himself has said the film is a hit and the collections of first week in chennai is only second to Rajini’s Shivaji, vijay, ajith, surya movies does not stnd in front of Kanthaswamy 1st week collections
http://sify.com/movies/tamil/fullstory.php?id=14907583
dont reply that sify website sucks, the information has been given by the distributor himself. Accept the Truth.
SearchIndia.com Responds:
You write: dont reply that sify website sucks, the information has been given by the distributor himself. Accept the Truth.
We remain skeptical of box office numbers that do not come from an independent, third-party.
That said, it’s possible the producers/distributors strategy of releasing the movie in several hundred theatres (900, according to reports) worked to their advantage.
But with the word of mouth not strong, the fate of the movie in the second and following weeks remains uncertain.
Since we have no skin in the game, it doesn’t matter to us one way or the other whether Kanthaswamy ultimately turns out to be a hit or flop. Only that it deserves to flop given its horrible quality.
Given the hype (ought to be prefixed with mega or giga) that precedes these blockbuster-wannabes, most theaters in the cities are sold out for the first 2-3 weeks.
Hence, b.o collections in the first couple of weeks are less an indication of the masses voting with their wallets (based on post-release word-of-mouth), than the potential for a tsunami of buyer’s remorse washing out the self-congratulatory messages of the committed fans. Uncorking the champagne bottles this early is a tad premature.
SearchIndia.com Responds:
You write above: Uncorking the champagne bottles this early is a tad premature
We couldn’t agree more but the movie’s makers have by this time uncorked the champagne bottle. Pl see the below excerpt from the Sify link cited by Arshad earlier:
I presume the early celebration is for the success of the pre-release hype 🙂
Apparently, in Chennai, the movie tickets were sold out to the tune of Rs. 1 crore prior to the release.
Vikram, like his mega-star cousins, is no doubt a crowd puller and the movie had a great opening, but the question is whether this interest has sustainable shelf-life given the mostly tepid/savage reviews (Sify being the lone cheerleader) from critics and viewers who have seen the film.
SearchIndia.com Responds:
You write above: the question is whether this interest has sustainable shelf-life
Well, we’ve always suspected that the H2O in Tamil Nadu has some unique ingredients. 😉
